Shopping cart race draws viewers, police

NEW YORK (UPI) — When the annual “Idiotarod” shopping cart race took place this weekend in New York, the event drew police as well as spectators.
The New York Times said after police unsuccessfully attempted to cancel Saturday’s Carts of Brooklyn Racing Association-sponsored event, entertained onlookers watched a team named Colonel Angus take home first prize.
Despite a formidable force including a helicopter, unmarked cars and even officers on horseback, the police department ultimately was forced to allow the annual race to take place.
But police remained to make sure the race’s contestants, who are urged to cheat during the event, behaved themselves, the Times said.
Many in the New York community of Williamsburg were shocked as racers arrived dressed as the Village People, comedian Bill Cosby and librarians, the report said.
“I came to visit my brother,” said Gilbert Ortega, who accidentally happened upon the quirky race. “I didn’t know what was happening. I thought it was Halloween or something.”

That story reminds me of the stupid things I did as a teen. – Put For Sale Signs in front of the High School on the 1st day of school.    What dumb thing did you do as a teen?

The word “forsaking” is taken from the Greek word egkatakeipntes.    eg means out;  kata means down; leipo means behind.  Many times when we’re down or depressed we seem to leave what is most important to us.  We may withdraw from our friends & loved ones.

What do you do when your down?

    KATA means SAID in malay!
    hehe

  • We used to do something very similar… we would have two teams and go to the 24 hours Meijers a grocery store… each team would fill a cart with none parishable items and meet at the front of the store where the carts would then be switched between the teams… watches would be sinchornized and we were OFF!

The first team to return all items to their proper place in the store and get to the caffateria with an empty cart won… The losers had to spring for hot chocolate… What can I say… we were VERY easily entertained…

Oh and it was much safer then cow tipping. lol (kidding) I would never be that cruel… poor cows. Ang

  • when I was single I don’t have time to be down cause surround with parents and sister. Now without them and by myself with my own family I just drive around or take a nap.

  • Think of others who are less fortunate than me and then i feel much better.

  • Good song! now you have a great day too.

  • If your question was about getting “down” on yourself, then I think that is a normal and common reaction to not meeting your own self-expections.  Getting “down” on yourself about things which are completely out of your control is a pure act of foolishness.  Oftentimes, when I am disappointed (or down) in an outcome I did have control over and it went awry, I examine my conscience as to what was the lesson-learned?  One must remove all the baggage sometimes, to see exactly what happened  to realize the “lesson.”  Should the situation should ever arise again, I can handle it quite differently.  I believe in being calm and soft spoken…I think much better that way and the “anxiety” level is reduced.   But, of course, Jesus tells us not to be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself.  This is a very tension-relaxing statement and clear, resolving thoughts can flow un-impugned by the anxiety of getting down on oneself.  This takes PRACTICE, but more than that…it takes a very certain TRUST in Jesus Christ…that He will show you the way and that takes a very certain HUMILITY.  So…I practice!

  • When I’m down, I internalize and analyze. And I find something chocolate to eat.

I am putting you on my protected list. I just realized I had missed you.

  • What was your biggest God moment?

  • helping others

  • lmao…funny….a for sale sign?  hee hee wish i would have thought of that!

  • Mine were the big things, but also the very small things where I know God is right there. He never forgets me and in spite of the stupid things I do, He still loves me.

  • I pace and pray and talk to my wife.  Generally the prayer, and my wife’s insight totally allow me to gain a different perspective from where I view it at.

The cart race would be fun to watch.  When I first read your blog, I thought the race was called the Idiot-rod (as opposed to “Idiotarod”), in relation to how a lightning rod attracts lightning….

  • when i am down i tend to isolate myself from others and sleep alot.

  • Yes, Oak Harbor, WA = The Puget Sound. I used to live less than a 5 minute walk to City Beach, a 10 minute drive to Libby Beach and there was lovely water everywhere!!! If only you knew how much I truly missed it there! Oh, and you haven’t LIVED until you’ve seen the Descep[tion Pass Bridge! I lived a 10 minute drive from there as well. Talk about BREATHTAKING! Take care and have an awesome hump day!

  • I have lived in big cities such as San Antonio and Las Vegas, and small towns such as Clarence, MO (population 1,200), but I hafta agree with you–the midwest is best!!  I luv it here!  = )  I don’t get “down” often, but when I do, I pray and talk to a good friend.  Take care & God bless!

  • What dumb thing DIDN’T I do when I was a teen? Seriously! =)

Anyway, when I’m down I like quiet time. Some peace to sort out thoughts and get with the program. A lot of activity or noise usually just makes it worse and stresses me out. When I was younger I used to write, but now I just sit and think. Sometimes nothing makes me feel better than a nap or a hug from my kids or hubby. It all depends. Prayer is also a great way to feel a sense of calm and reassurance. =)

  • That would’ve been interesting to see!
Unfortunately the first thing I usually turn to when I’m down is myself- being solitary for a while. I’d then turn things over to God, which I should always do first hand, and feel a lot better afterwards. Somehow, I forget how overwhelmingly calming it would be to pray first.

  • As a teen… I didn’t do any dumb things… there were enough boys doing them!

I don’t usually get down, but when I do, I listen to music I like… it makes me feel better.

  • I have a good cry. I pray. I talk to my Hubby. Then I look for somebody who is lonely, or sick, or has worse problems than me and I go do something nice for them. I get involved in loving them and it puts my life in perspective.

Hope you are well today, my friend!

  • When I’m down, I just rethink things over. Think of a solution, or something that’ll help cheer me up. And if theres nothing, I can always sleep.

  • It was a 10 church trip to Israel…it was so beautiful there! I missed like…3 days of the trip because I was in the hospital sick with food poisoining. haha The hotel staff remembered me when I came back from the hospital and they were like sending me up any food I want and everything! It was awesome

What do I do when I’m down?
I talk to my mother…but when its like something that is bugging me so much that I dont want to talk to her about it I go into my room sit in there staring out my window, listen to slow music [sometimes sing to it], and talk to God & my cat Josie at the same time. haha

  • Sleep pretty much makes an all new day, and it doesn’t hurt at all since many of us are deprived of sleep. =)

  • It is almost Spring here. All the flowers are starting to bloom and the trees are budded. Judi

  • When it happens I am down I go in my vegetable garden to work at hand .

You ask me if I have been in USA . No I only went to Toronto in 2001 especially for the 60th wedding anniversary of a friend lost of sight since ….1944 !!! To go to the US I would have to have a very special reason . If not where to go . It is so immense !
    In friendship
    Michel

ps : I woukld be curious to know the process leading from the greek word to ” forsaking ” . They sound so different .
