Family leave: The good, the bad, and the terrible

    Canada
Working moms get a yearlong leave after they have a baby, and receive 55 percent of their salary during that year. This is a government benefit, and women are entitled to the same job or a comparable one when their leave is over. Many companies supplement this benefit with additional dollars during maternity leave.

    Austria
Pregnant women get eight weeks off before and after the birth of their baby, and receive a full salary.

    Cuba
Moms get six months maternity leave, with full salary.

    India
The law requires employers to provide maternity leave, but BabyCenter editor Vidya Sen calls the law a "toothless tiger." "It's not enforced," Sen says. "When a woman's employer finds out she's pregnant, although an employer won't come right and ask her to leave, she's often politely sidelined and made to feel unwanted." Women employed by multinational corporations frequently fare much better, receiving as many as 90 days of paid leave, depending on the company.

United States  The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), passed in 1993, guarantees three months of job-protected, unpaid family leave, but only to those who work for the government or large companies. A few states have, or are considering enacting, paid family leave provisions.

    Sweden
Parents receive over a year of leave and other benefits, and they can share the time off, with each parent taking half the time off to be with the child. If either parent wants to work half-time, they can extend their benefits even longer. "The family leave policy in Sweden is wonderful for parents — and for children, too," BabyCenter editor Carina Westling says.

We share time together, welcome the new mothers, and play games where we exchange small gifts. Next, the oldest mom shares her words of wisdom. Then we enjoy a meal together."

How are pregnant women and mothers treated in your country?

    England
Pregnant women don't receive much special treatment, according to Sasha Miller. "There's little respect or reverence," she says. "You can be standing on the bus, and people will stare at their newspaper and pretend they don't see you."

    China & India
In China, once a woman becomes pregnant, the focus of the entire family is on her and her baby. According to Vidya Sen, the same holds true in India. Everyone in the family makes sure the mom-to-be is eating well and is protected from any hazards.

    Sweden
"You can certainly expect to be given a seat on public transportation," says Carina Westling. "At the same time, it's not polite to assume that a pregnant woman needs lots of attention. In Sweden today, people are accommodating but don't see pregnancy or motherhood as defining you. That would be considered rude."

    Dominican Republic
"Pregnancy and motherhood are ingrained in the culture of Latin American countries," says BabyCenter editor Isidra Mencos. "Mothers and motherhood are revered, and pregnant women receive respect wherever they go."

    Canada
Sometimes women or older men will give you their seat on the streetcar, says BabyCenter editor Ann Elisabeth Samson. "One challenge is making sure that they know you're pregnant, particularly in winter when you're wearing a bulky coat," she says. "I've been known to unbutton my coat and show my belly in order to get a seat."

    One
    : Don't miss the boat.
    Two
: Remember that we are all in the same boat.
    Three
: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
    Four
: Stay fit When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
    Five
: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
    Six
: Build your future on high ground.
    Seven
: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
    Eight
: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
    Nine
    : When you're stressed, float a while.
    Ten
: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
    Eleven

Funny fictional quotes from mothers in history...

PAUL REVERE'S MOTHER: "I don't care where you think
you have to go,young man. Midnight is past your curfew!"

He was a Boston silversmith who was summoned by Dr. Joseph Warren to carry the news of the British plans to march to Lexington and Concord on April 19.1775. Paul Revere never held high political office, wrote no great papers, and never commanded an army. Still he was a critical part of the effort to bring about American independence.

"The historical Paul Revere was much more then merely a midnight messenger. During the pivotal period from the Fall of 1774 to the Spring of 1775, he had an uncanny genius for being at the center of events. His actions made a difference, most of all in mobilizing the acts of many others."

oh_mother_may_I has interviewed me with the following questions, so here goes! (questions)

    1) What is the most favorite place you have traveled to and why?
Niagra Falls - It was a vacation during a very difficult time in my family.  We were in the process of adopting and were told it wasn't going to happen.  (Prayer changed it and later we were able to adopt the 2 children.)

    2) What joy do you most indulge in the most?
    Indulge?  I guess I don't know.

    3) Where did you meet your wife at? and When did you decide she was the one for you?
McDonald's.   I was a supervisor and she was an employee.  At the McDonalds annual picnic.

    4) What hobby gives you the most pleasure? and How many do you have?
Hobby - Reading and Writing    I love to do both with equal pleasure.

    5) In forty to fifty words what bests describes who and what you are deep with-in?
Forty stands for trials and tribulations.
Fifty stands for Jubilee or freedom
Those two numbers represent a lot of my life.  I'm in a process of becoming more like Jesus.  I go through trials in order to move into greater freedom.  At the present time I just exited tribulation and I'm experiencing greater freedom.
