  • Elevator

AV255_USS_KITTY_HAWK.jpgI was reading a story how some 25 Missouri teenagers caused an elevator to quit operating when I thought of my Navy story.

The USS Kitty Hawk anchored off the coast of Perth, Australia.  The ship allowed the Australians to come aboard to tour the ship.  I was one of the tour guides.  I had 20 – 25 Australians in my group.  I thought it would be fun to take them on the ship’s elevator. I had forgotten that in port the elevator was shut off, so we climbed it.  I had also forgotten that a “shut off” elevator will go backwards when enough people are on it.  So it started to go backwards as we were climbing.  So we began to run towards the top.  You get the picture, the faster we ran the faster it operated backwards.  Well a few of us made it to the top, while the others were piled up at the bottom.  The Australians thought that was a great experience, to which I was relieved.          A side note:  The Australians love Americans.  I asked the group why and they responded:  “We haven’t forgotten that it was America who helped us in WW2.”

  • RYC- Thanks. Looking at your “Today in History”, I never realized JFK married Jackie when she was SO much younger than him! That’s a BIG difference at that age.

  • I can just picture that!
Glad that they thought it was a great time!

  • This cartoon pic is superb! I think being a tour guide is wondeful experience! U come to know so many people and whts imp you form a place in everyone’s heart!

Keep smiling….( JUST SMILE will also do)!! LOL

  • RYC- Great point, reminds me of where Jesus said “On this ROCK I will build My church”……

  • That’s funny… Yes, I experienced the same thinking when I was there, where the base was still had some left over WW2 ‘junk’ artifacts there, old air raid shelters, outposts and vehicals and landing craft…. rusting hulks of former activity.

The base I was at was about 850 k north of Perth, on the Northwest Cape, about 20 k from Exmouth, Western Australia

  • I bet that was funny. Might as well enjoy the humor. The cartoon would make a great grandparents day card.

  • you’re funny-I remember some of my older pts. telling me they were in the Pacific and were down in Australia.

  • My Uncle Rueben was stationed in Australia when he was in the Navy–must be in the late 40′s or early 50′s (?)–and he came back to the States with an Australian wife, my Aunt Louie. Of course, they are both gone now. I always loved to hear her talk. Beautiful accent.  Wow!! Jackie was quite a bit younger than her husband. When you have a second, come over and check out the update on Kevin. Thanks. ~Carolyn

  • LOL! Nice!

Personally, I’m pretty fond of the Aussies myself. I’ve always said that there are only two countries I’d live in if I were forced to leave the U.S. – Canada and Australia (and not necessarily in that order).

  • I’ve always liked the aussies.  I would love to go to Australia some day.  I would love living there, if they didn’t have such a liberal president, that is….  but nonetheless, Australia is a beautiful country with great people! Did you know that PM John Howard had an hearing impairment in his youth?

  • and I love a sense of humor……..and happy children….

  • Great story and even greater cartoon.

  • LOL!!! That is really funny! I have heard that Aussies are known for their sense of humor.

  • I had no idea that any country out there cared for us at all!
