Month: September 2007

  • Day Off

Day off today.  I might be strange but I look forward to doing our finances.  I love it.  I love it so much I do it for 3 other people.
My plans today:  I'm going to look for a new recipe and cook it today.  -possibly home made ravioli.
I'm going to listen to a lot of the Old Testament.  King Solomon amazes me.
I'm going to watch at least 1 Star Trek and 1 Mash.

What do you do on your day off?

  • Driving

92689_2007_ford_shelby_cobra_gt500.jpgI was listening to the news last night.  They had a report on it about how long people stay in traffic in order to get to work.
I'm curious:  How long does it take you to get to work?

  • Danielle's Birthday

We took Danielle out to supper last night at Outback in Sioux City, Iowa.  It was a good time.  She turned 17 on the 17th.  My 23 year old will turn 23 on the 23rd.  How's that for the month of September?

I was reading Psalms 10 this morning.  It said the wicked go after the afflicted.  As I was thinking about this I thought of how cruel the press is to a celebrity that "goes wrong."
The pure in heart will see God.

  • Monday

I'm feeling good.  All the allergy stuff has left. The battle has subsided.  I'm ready to dive into the rest of my life.

Pastor revealed the plans for our 17,000 sq ft addition to our present building.
    It would give us:
    A new 60 x 90 sanctuary (1/3 larger)
Larger and more sound proofed nursery
Youth chapel to include recreational games.
    Several large classrooms
Extensive fellowship hall with multi-purpose/gym space converted from the old sanctuary.

Hopefully the building project starts this spring.

  • Mix-Up

    Airport Mix-Up

During the 'rush hour' at Houston's Hobby Airport, a flight was delayed due to a mechanical problem.

Since they needed the gate for another flight, the aircraft was backed away from the gate while the maintenance crew worked on it. The passengers were then told the new gate number, which was some distance away. Everyone moved to the new gate, only to find a third gate had been designated for them.

After some further shuffling, everyone got on board, and as they were settling in, the flight attendant made the standard announcement, 'We apologise for the inconvenience of this last-minute gate change. This flight is going to Washington, D.C. If your destination is not Washington, D.C., then you should 'deplane' at this time.'

A very confused-looking and red-faced pilot emerged from the cockpit, carrying his bags. 'Sorry,' he said, wrong plane.'

  • As a child....

I grew up in a gas station. I loved to go out in the back garage and play.  My Dad put a lot of old car radios and parts out there.  I would pretend I was in outer space traveling the universe.  My imagination soared and I had a lot of great memories there.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

  • Prayer

    Dear Father God,
Keep my eyes focused on Jesus. Help me carefully consider him.
Let me see his faithfulness. Let me see his worthiness to be
    honored.
Let me see him as the one who has called me to a heavenly calling.
Let me see him as the very Son of God, faithful over God's
household, and let me see myself as part of that household of
faith, and let us hold fast our confidence and our pride in our
    hope.
In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

    What's your prayer today?

  • Elevator

AV255_USS_KITTY_HAWK.jpgI was reading a story how some 25 Missouri teenagers caused an elevator to quit operating when I thought of my Navy story.

The USS Kitty Hawk anchored off the coast of Perth, Australia.  The ship allowed the Australians to come aboard to tour the ship.  I was one of the tour guides.  I had 20 - 25 Australians in my group.  I thought it would be fun to take them on the ship's elevator. I had forgotten that in port the elevator was shut off, so we climbed it.  I had also forgotten that a "shut off" elevator will go backwards when enough people are on it.  So it started to go backwards as we were climbing.  So we began to run towards the top.  You get the picture, the faster we ran the faster it operated backwards.  Well a few of us made it to the top, while the others were piled up at the bottom.  The Australians thought that was a great experience, to which I was relieved.          A side note:  The Australians love Americans.  I asked the group why and they responded:  "We haven't forgotten that it was America who helped us in WW2."

    John G. Lake

John Graham Lake, (1870-1935), usually known as "John G. Lake", was a businessman influenced by the healing ministry of John Alexander Dowie, received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in 1907 in the wake of the Azusa Street Revival and became known for his ministry as a missionary and “faith healer.” His life and message are represented in a book compiled by Roberts Liardon, entitled, John G. Lake: The Complete Collection of His Life Teachings.

Lake was originally from Ontario, Canada. He was from a large family, which was continually affected with illness, and his memory of childhood was that there was always someone in the house either sick, dying or dead. Lake was a very industrious businessman, and started two newspapers, before beginning a very successful career in real estate. By the time he left for the mission field he walked away from a $50,000 year salary (around 1 million in 2005 dollars), as well as his seat on the Chicago Board of Trade.

Early in his career, Lake's wife, whom he deeply loved, and even adored, fell ill with a life threatening illness. Having a lifetime of suffering and bereavement behind him, he refused to accept this, and took the radical step of taking her to see John Alexander Dowie. Dowie had a reputation as a wild faith healer and founder of Zion City, Illinois fifty miles north of Chicago around this belief. Lake's wife recovered and he was drawn into Dowie's movement, and he eventually became and elder in the church. It was here that he began to practice "divine healing". Although Dowie rejected the Pentecostal message, a number of early Pentecostal leaders, including F.F. Bosworth, were trained under Dowie.

Lake's greatest ministry was in South Africa, and his ministry there had dramatic and far reaching consequences. The incredible stories of his ministry are too numerous to recount [and difficult to verify]. With Thomas Hezmalhalch he founded the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa in 1908, which attracted many of the early Zionists led by Pieter L. le Roux of Wakkerstroom. Le Roux took over the leadership of the Apostolic Faith Mission when Lake returned to America, and led it for 30 years.

Lake's ministry was unique and he had relationships with many of the leading figures of his day including railroad tycoon, James J. Hill, Cecil Rhodes, Mahatma Gandhi, Conan Doyle, and others. After his ministry in South Africa, he returned to the US and settled in Spokane, Washington, where he established "Healing Rooms", and saw tens of thousands allegedly healed either under his hands or those he trained.
