    Massive snow fort holds 20

NEENAH, Wis. (UPI) — A teenager in Neenah, Wis., put his snow fort-building skills to use, constructing an igloo in his parents’ front yard that can hold 20 people.

Dan Meyer, 18, said he used his 10 years of snow construction experience to form snow brought to the yard by city dump trucks into a massive snow fort that reaches above the first story of his parents’ home, the Appleton (Wis.) Post-Crescent reported.

Meyer said it took seven truckloads of snow to sculpt the 8-foot high, 14-foot wide and 34-foot long structure.

“I was just amazed by how much one load was,” Meyer said. “Then I piled it up and called them for more loads.”

Jeff Harding, assistant superintendent of public works for Neenah, said the city occasionally gets requests for truckloads of snow, but this was the first instance he knew about where the snow went toward a construction project.

“We backed up in the front yard and dumped away, just like we would at our dump site,” he said. “It’s really like, ‘My God, what are you doing with all this snow?’”

Would you allow the city to dumb snow in your front lawn so your kids could build a fort?

  • I don’t yet have kids so I can’t imagine. Let’s cross that bridge when we get there haha.

  • Then again I DO like bargaining… if we could come up with some sweet compromise, then sure.

  • Yeah, what fun!

  • No! I am not a fan of snow…. or kids, but least of all… snow!

  • yes, since we only get snow about once a year ;that would be fun for the whole neighborhood.

  • That would be cool, I think. But sad to say with all the lawsuits around they would never do it here. What if the fort falls on someone! *sigh* Party poopers!!

  • haha I would allow it. It would be fun :P BUT…Our city doesnt seem to PLOW snow at ALL!!! We rarely see the city here do ANYTHING.

  • I wouldn’t.  Think about how long it going to take that thing to melt.  When it does they’ll have bald spots in their yard.

  • Wow, our snow forts were usually walls high enough to ward off enemy fire!

  • I am afraid if all that snow was dumped in my yard, all the wild neighborhood kid s would be in my yard too.

  • I could see doing it one year… sometimes the cool memory is worth the inconvenience. Life is kind of all about those cool memories isnt it?

  • Sure I would.  We made a snow fort for the kids while living in CO.  The kids loved it as well as the neighbors.

  • Yes, I definitely would love to have the kids build a snow fort in our yard.  I love having the kids here creating things.  They use tinker toys, legos, lincoln logs, and snow would also be awesome.  I would be right there camera in hand enjoying every moment.    PS  We did this snow forting back when I was a kid.  Fun!!!

  • Heck no! The snow in new england comes so frequently that It would literally, be, a winter wonderland…….minues the wonder.

  • :) Cool response

  • Truthfully I don’t think I could stop my husband from allowing it to happen.  LOL

  • we use to buld ours in snow that has piled high as a kid, growing up in NH it was usually 20+ foot piles.  We’d make battlements, tunnels, rooms at the ground level.  amazing we never had a cave in and no one ever got hurt

  • Yeah, I live near Neenah, WI.  I saw a report on the local news tonight about that snow fort. I think we could build an igloo that big in our front yard without having them dump snow… we are near an alltime record for snowfall this year!
