    Thinking

“We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB

RenĂ© Descartes, born on this day near Tours, France in 1596, was a brilliant child, entering college when he was just eight. Because of poor health, he was permitted to remain in bed until 11 o’clock each morning, a habit he maintained throughout his life.

His diverse career included a law degree and a stint in the Bavarian army. Through extensive travels, he made many contacts before settling down in Holland in 1628. Because of his ideas and influences, he has been called the father of modern philosophy. He also revolutionized mathematics by applying algebra to geometry, leading to principles still taught in schools worldwide.

Descartes is best remembered for one of history’s most famous quotes, “I think, therefore I am” (from a book he published in 1637). He was obsessed with thinking. Historian Kenneth Clark observed that, early in life, Descartes “discovered that all he wanted to do was to think.” One morning, when friends came to visit, they found him in bed. They asked what he was doing, and he replied: “Thinking!”

Yes, as Descartes discovered, thinking is important. God has given us incredibly complex minds so we can think, reason, learn, and understand. But it can be easy to depend on our own reasoning and focus on what we think. Although God wants us to think and develop our minds, we must remember that our spiritual lives are even more crucial. As Paul reminds us, we need to take “every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”

Today, ask God to give you greater wisdom and understanding and help you think more clearly. Fill your mind with His Word. Let it guide you. Make it the basis for your thoughts. Submit all your thoughts to Him.

    Afterlife

After dying in a car crash, three friends go to Heaven for orientation. They are all asked the same question, “When you’re lying in your casket, and friends and family are mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say about you?”

The first guy immediately responds, “I would like to hear them say that I was one of the great doctors of my time, and a great family man.”

The second guy says, “I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in the children of tomorrow.”

The last guy thinks for a moment, and then replies, “I guess I’d like to hear them say, ‘ Look, he’s moving!’”

How do you rate your church in sleepability?
1- Too exciting – couldn’t go to sleep if I wanted to.
2- Exciting – but I occasionally will nod.
3- OK – but I struggle with dream land.
4- Average – Instead of saying “Good Morning, I think “Good Night”

  • Funny Day

I heard a funny/sad story.  It was about a fallen soldier and the way he got his wife.  They were at a function and he went up to her and said, “An ugly girl is after me would you pretend to be my girlfriend so she’ll leave me alone.”   It worked and they eventually got married.

    Snow Parking

Harry and Martha were sitting down to their usual morning cup of coffee listening to the weather report coming over the radio. “There will be 3 to 5 inches of snow today and a snow emergency has been declared. You must park your cars on the odd numbered side of the streets.”

Harry got up from his coffee and replied “Well, okay.”

Two days later, again they both are sitting down with their morning cup of coffee and the weather forecast is, “There will be 2 to 4 inches of snow today and a snow emergency has been declared. You must park your cars on the even numbered side of the streets.”

Harry got up from his coffee and replied, “Well, okay.”

Three days later, again they both are sitting down with their cup of coffee and the weather forecast is, “There will be 6 to 8 inches of snow today and a snow emergency has been declared. You must park your cars on the…” and then the power went off and Harry didn’t get the rest of the instructions. He said to Martha, “What am I going to do now, Martha?”

    Amazing Discovery

German scientists dug 50 meters underground and discovered small pieces of copper. After studying these pieces for a long time, Germany announced that the ancient Germans 25,000 years ago had a nation-wide telephone network.

Naturally, the British government was not that easily impressed. They ordered their own scientists to dig even deeper. 100 meters down, they found small pieces of glass, and they soon announced that the ancient Brits 35,000 years ago already had a nation-wide fibre net.

Israeli scientists were outraged. They dug 50, 100 and 200 meters underground, but found absolutely nothing…

They concluded that the ancient Hebrews 55,000 years ago had cellular telephones.

Martha said, “Aw, Harry, just leave the car in the garage.”

  • Tattling or Reporting?

One thing I teach my children is the difference between tattling or reporting.  Tattling is when it is to your own benefit to “tell on” another child.  Children will tattle on other kids when their own feelings are hurt or when that child wants a greater position.  Reporting on the other hand is to keep another child safe.  Example:  My children need to report to me if one of the smaller children are riding their bikes too close to the street or if they see another child stealing something.

The definition of Tattle: to utter or disclose in gossip or chatter.

This rule can be applied to adults as well.  I see adults running to other adults in gossip when their feelings are hurt.  (In the child’s world we call it tattling.)  The Bible is clear that when someone else offends you, you are suppose to go to that person. (Not run to other people.) Then if that person doesn’t respond like you want, then you can go and ask another person to go with you.  Reporting on the other hand is different.  If you see someone breaking the law it needs to be reported to the authorities – not the local prayer club.  Here’s an example of a religious way to gossip:  “I have this prayer request …………………”

How do you handle it when someone offends you?

    Christ Arose!

“He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” - Luke 24:6-7 NASB

  • Friday was bad, but Sunday is on the way

Talk about a roller coaster of emotions.  Alicia is back from college.  Brooke my 17 year old adopted daughter is here on visit.  Danielle my 17 year old daughter is in the hospital and my wife is staying with her.  (She can’t eat or drink anything with it coming up.)  We had plans yesterday but had to change everything.  Reminds me of a certain Friday so many years ago.  His closest champanion was jailed and executed for conspiracy charges against the state.  Trully a clash of two worlds.  It’s dark today but it is just before the light shines.  (Danielle is coming home from the hospital this morning.)

  • The Day it Turned Dark

    Good Friday

“Who is this man?” Ah! That’s the real question we need to be asking.
He is more than a man, but is yet fully human. He is pre-existent and
created all things, yet was hung on a tree that he made and killed by
people whom he created in the wombs of their mothers. He has all power,
yet withholds it to go to the Cross to bear the weight of our sins. Who
is this man? Who do you say that this man is?
