    TODAY’S CLEAN LAUGH

    *Second Try*

Arriving home from work at my usual hour of 5 p.m., I discovered that it had not been one of my wife’s better days. Nothing I said or did seemed to be right.

By 7 p.m. things had not changed, so I suggested I go outside, pretend I had just got home, and start all over again. My wife agreed.

I went outside, came back in and, with a big smile, announced, “Honey, I’m home!”

“And just where have you been?” she replied sharply “It’s after seven o’clock!”

*Thanks to Pastor Tim for this joke!*

  • Three hundred Greek warriors changed the course of history. Known as “the 300,” they dared to face the mighty Persian army in 480 B.C. Although vastly outnumbered, these warriors surprised the Persians with tenacity and courage at the battle of Thermopylae. Technically, they lost the battle (and they all lost their lives), but their efforts inspired the ultimate victory, achieved at the battle of Salamis.

I’m reading about the French and Indian war.  The British refused to change their tactics and instisted on using the European style of combat.  That style did not work in the American wilderness.

Are we going to change and change history?  The definition of insanity is wanting change without changing.

  • Gold

Rembrandt van Rijn had a profound knowledge of the Bible. This great Dutch artist, born on this day in 1606, frequently turned to the Bible for inspiration. In 1635, he turned his attention to the story of Belshazzar’s feast. Historian Paul Johnson observed that Rembrandt invested his painting “with a breathless excitement that has eluded all other artists who have tackled this wonderful subject.”

Instead of focusing on the masses attending the feast, Rembrandt brings us into the intimacy of the moment as Belshazzar confronts God’s mysterious message, written by “the fingers of a man’s hand.” The king’s eyes are mesmerized. We feel his shock. What could the words mean? A handful of onlookers share his horrified puzzlement.

Rembrandt portrayed the king’s lavish wardrobe, a glorious crown, and golden vessels, perhaps taken from the Temple in Jerusalem. Scholar Simon Schama commented that Rembrandt focused on the gold “as a curse…a kind of leprous contamination.” This gold symbolized Belshazzar’s life-outwardly blessed but inwardly barren.

The Bible tells us no one knew what the words meant. Then the queen reminded Belshazzar about Daniel, who was summoned and gave the sobering interpretation: The king had been arrogant, and now it was time for him to face God and give an account of his life.

Rembrandt’s painting reminds us that many people focus on accumulating material wealth and power. Like Belshazzar, they are arrogant and proud. But, eventually, all of us will face God to be judged for what we’ve done and how we’ve spent our lives.

Today, make sure you are ready to face God. Humble yourself. Seek Him. Surrender your life to Him. And seek first His Kingdom.

  • For a quiet man, John Calvin stirred up intense reactions. After he had a personal conversion experience with Christ, he could not stay silent, even though he knew the risks were high. He remained in Paris as long as he could, studying law and writing. But eventually he had to flee for his life.

Possessing an iron will, Calvin became a resolute believer in God’s Word. He diligently studied the Word, looking for insights and asking God to reveal more of His Truth. He wrote commentary after commentary. Many of his sermons were rich examinations of the Bible that challenged Believers to study the Word more for themselves. Over a period of just a few years, he is known to have preached 189 sermons on Acts, 173 on Ezekiel, and 200 on Deuteronomy. Through his example and the impact of his testimony, he changed history.

Calvin inspired generations to a more intense, serious faith-a faith based on God’s Word. He called Believers to learn the Word and live the Word. This commitment led to the formation of countless educational institutions. Author David Holmes has pointed out that, “As of 1770, two-thirds of the institutions of higher education in the American colonies were of Calvinist origins.”

Today, the world needs Christians with this same commitment-those who believe in the Word and are ready to unleash its full power! Make sure you are committed to putting the teachings of the Bible into action. Never compromise. Don’t be silent. Stand up! Be bold!
