  • More Than Conquerors

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” - Romans 8:37 NKJV

John Robinson had no doubts: Christians must be involved in every facet of life, including politics, government, and commerce. And it was not acceptable to withdraw, compromise, or admit defeat.

Born around 1575 in England’s East Midlands, Robinson became a pastor. Feeling compelled to speak out about the need for a purer faith, around 1607 he left the Church of England and joined a Separatist congregation. Eventually, these Christians felt so strongly about their convictions that they decided to emigrate to The Netherlands, with Robinson as their pastor.

Gradually, many of these Believers concluded that their greatest hope of religious freedom was in the New World. They knew the risks were high, conditions might be harsh, and some might not even survive. Even so, these “Pilgrims” were convinced nothing was more important than serving God.

Although Robinson fully supported this dangerous mission, he felt led to stay behind. Before these Pilgrims left for America, he wrote them a letter reminding them they were “more than conquerors” through Christ. He also charged them that, upon reaching the New World, “You are to become a body politic, using among yourselves civil government.” He knew they could not neglect the practical issues of life, but must choose faithful leaders who would lead them according to Biblical principles. His letter inspired the Pilgrims to sign the Mayflower Compact, America’s first governing document.

Although the times may have changed, the principles espoused by leaders like John Robinson remain the same. God still looks for courageous people who will put their faith in Him and refuse to compromise their convictions.

Today, don’t be silent. Speak out! Get involved. Vote. Take a stand for your faith.

  • Up in Smoke

General Robert E. Lee thought “Order Number 191″ might contain the key to victory in the American Civil War. His Army of Northern Virginia was about to invade the North for the first time, hoping this would lead to the cessation of fighting. When issued on September 9, 1862, this order detailed troop movements and strategy.

Little did General Lee know that three of his men decided to use this order to wrap cigars. A few days later, purely by accident, one of these cigars was found by the opposing Northern forces. When General George McClellan, their commanding general, saw the document, he knew this might be the key to bring him victory.

In the ensuing battle, fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland, the North emerged as a qualified victor, but the outcome was not clear-cut. Why? Even though McClellan knew the enemy’s plans, many believe he didn’t act decisively enough. As a result, total victory eluded both sides.

In the spiritual realm, many of us fail to experience the victory God desires, in part because we don’t realize we can know the plans and schemes of our enemy! We don’t have to be defeated if we depend on God’s Word and His battle plan.

Today, don’t accept defeat or anything less than the complete victory God wants for you. Act decisively! Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on His full armor. Stand firm. Know the Truth in God’s Word. Don’t compromise!

Commit your life to serving God and His Kingdom. Take up the shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Remember you are in a spiritual war, which must be fought in the Holy Spirit’s power.

  • With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth noting the death of a very important person in the music industry. which almost went unnoticed this past week.

Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote “The Hokey Pokey,” died peacefully in his sleep at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin.

First they put his left leg in…..and that’s when the trouble started.
