Herod
During his 32 years as unquestioned sovereign of Judea, Herod the Great became known as a builder. His legacy included fortresses, aqueducts, theatres, and other public buildings, including the Temple in Jerusalem. Born in 73 BC, Herod was not a Jew, but an Idumean, born in southern Palestine. His political connections helped him gain and keep power, and his close friends included many in Rome, such as Mark Antony. But these connections also made him hated by many Jews who resented his pro-Roman positions.
Herod also was feared. He was an opportunist and could be ruthless and cunning. Often driven by violent jealousy, he arranged for the murder of one of his wives, Mariamne, and several other family members. Of Herod, Octavian (later called Caesar Augustus) once said, “I’d sooner be his pig than his son.”
This was the man the magi visited, who directed them to go to Bethlehem to find the “king of the Jews.” He’s also the one who lashed out when the magi didn’t tell him the location of this King, slaughtering all male children near Bethlehem. Joseph fled from this man into Egypt with Mary and baby Jesus, and only after Herod’s death was it safe for them to return.
Today, the lands Herod governed are the center of ongoing conflicts, threats, and wars. Some, like Herod, think the solution is through power or control, politics or military might. But the only real answer is the Baby who was born when Herod was king. He is Jesus, the Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, and Mighty God. “There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace” (Isaiah 9:6-7).
Jesus is the Answer! For the world, and for you! Worship Him! Commit your life to Him! He is the King!
