  • Elihu

Who, exactly, was Elihu? He appears suddenly, at the end of the dialogue between Job and his three friends. Neither Job nor God ever referred to him. He has been the subject of many debates among scholars, yet his presence in Job's story offers many insights.

First, Elihu demonstrated that God can speak through anyone. At a time when young people were not encouraged to speak, this young man felt compelled to share what God had shown him, and he had the courage to speak out.

But perhaps the most important insight about Elihu was his sense that he couldn't withhold the words that were in his heart, for he was "about to burst." Unable to contain himself, he felt it necessary to speak in order to "get relief." He felt compelled to speak and act, even though he realized others might reject his words, simply because of his young age and lack of experience.

This is a picture of how God sometimes speaks to us. If He wants us to say or do something, He may cause us to experience this kind of pressure or burdenâan urge we cannot contain, even in circumstances where we naturally might want to remain silent.

  • Kalli came home from school yesterday. (Our 5 year old)  They had given her my "Father of the Year" award from the entire state of South Dakota.  She thought they had given it to her.  She was so happy that she was the only child in her class that got that.  Of course I let her believe that and congradulated her on it.

  • Integrity

David confidently asked for vindication. Why? Because he had walked in integrity. Instead of compromising, he "trusted in the Lord" and based his life on God's Word. No matter what temptations or pressures he faced, he remained steadfast and refused to waver. When he faced enemies, he called on God, confident that his heart was clean.

But David also knew that God must search his life: "Examine me, O LORD, and try me; test my mind and my heart" (v. 2). He recognized the danger of harboring hidden sins and doing or saying the wrong things.

David ended the psalm by stating his determination to "walk in my integrity" (v. 11), confident that his feet were standing "on a level place" (v. 12). To keep from slipping into sin, he kept God's lovingkindness constantly before him (v. 3) and washed his hands "in innocence" (v. 6).

David also was careful about his relationships and would not "sit with deceitful men," or "go with pretenders" (v. 4). He hated "the assembly of evildoers" (v. 5) and chose instead to spend his time in God's house, "the place where Your glory dwells" (v. 8).

His life was focused on serving God: "I will go about Your altar, O LORD" (v. 6). His desire was to "proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving and declare all Your wonders" (v. 7). He sought to be in congregations of God's people where he could "bless the LORD" (v. 12).
