  • Who was the 1st President of the United States?

Don’t be so quick to say George Washington.  He was not our first President.  Washington was the first president elected under the Constitution, taking office in 1789.  John Hanson, in November 1781, became the first President of Congress to be elected under the terms of the Articles of Confederation.  He served only a year.  A colleague wrote:  “I congratulate your Excellency on your appointment to fill the most important seat in the United States.”  That letter was signed by none other than George Washington.

Under Hanson’s leadership, Congress established the Treasury Department, adopted the Great Seal of the United States and declared the fourth Thursday of every November “a day of Thanksgiving.”

    How would Hanson DC sound?
