  • Frame of Mind

A distant thought comes careening back from outer space, crash-landing in my conscience like an asteroid. Awwww, man. I meant to be a really good and patient teacher today.  Sarah Cunningham

My mind is a vast acrerage of swap meet booths.  My enviroment dictates what’s being projected in each of those booths.  Do I have a choice as to how my enviroment affects me?  If one of those booths was selling dilly bars, could I stay unaffected even though dilly bars affect me?  Maybe if I paint the ice cream booth a different color? Orange? (My least favorite color) Maybe if every time I walk into the ice cream booth I poke myself with a pin?  Human efforts to a spiritual dillemia.  What if I put on a helmit?  What if I ask the Holy Spirit to “Color me with Red”?  Could I then resist chocolate in the Hersey’s booth?  I think I can because the booth is now seen through a different vision.  I can wear the new glasses into every booth and see life in full color.

  • Certainly, we can always choose how we want to be affected by different settings or scenarios. As humans, we act on many different instincts, whether it is to act on first impressions, to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, or to just walk away in apathy. Each situation calls for a different reaction and sometimes, there is no one correct reaction, depending on who is involved.

  • Those are very interesting and imaginative questions.

God has given us free will. We do have power of choice, although sometimes it seems none of the choices are good, and being between “a rock and a hard place” is what it’s like. It’s easier when one choice is clearly better or the best. I like the reference to wearing new glasses to view the booths.
