The Street of a Thousand Blossoms by Gail Tsukiyama

This book was about Japan before, during and after the war.  Three generations of view.  The story follows the life of two boys: Kenji and Hiroshi.  These boys were orphaned at a young age and lived with their grandparents.  Kenji would be a mask maker for the theater and Hiroshi a Sumo wrestler.
This book gave me a front row seat to an eye witness account of how WW2 affected Japan.  Gail wrote in such a way as for me to feel the heat, experience the pain and see the results of the atomic bomb.  It will be life long memories of a nation at war under a brutal regime and how Japan came through it.  I will never look at Japan the same.
At the end of the war a character says, “The number of lives lost abroad and at home was staggering. And in the end, what was it all for?”  The author did a good job at showing the futility of the war.  As I read I saw the senseless loss of families, the dislocation of the same.  It was heart wrenching to experience these tragedies through the eyes of the characters.
I highly recommend this book. It’s not a book of surprises but of normal (if you can call it that in a war) Japanese lives.  I had to will myself to keep reading at times but was so rewarded when I did.  I came away with a great appreciation of peace time and a greater love for the Japanese people.

A fellow xangan recommended this book and I’m glad she did.  Gina

Do you have any books/Authors that you recommend and why?

Lately I’ve been in such a pensive mood.  I’m attempting to get my goals and direction solidified for the year and I’m not been very good at paying attention.  I don’t mind seasons of pensive thinking but I can’t live there.

Word of the Day – Pensive

  • Wild Life

22 Lions Killed In First Weeks Of S.D. Season

We had a massive amount of birds that died here in Yankton by the Missouri River.  It was a mystery until the Department of Agriculture admitted to poisoning the birds at a feed lot several miles from the Riverside Park.  They said it was rare that the birds flew that far and died.  Apparently the birds were a menace to the feed lot.

What wild life do you have in your area?

If I am against something I don’t have a problem remonstrating it.

Word of the Day – remonstrate

  • Mood

I’ve been in an excited mood all this week.  There is a stirring within me that exciting things are in store for this year.

What one word describes your mood right now?

I’m glad my children were not pugnacious this morning.  It was actually a very good morning.

Word of the Day – Pugnacious

  • Funny

Last Wednesday night 2 girls were verbally fighting. It actually started at school and spilled over to Heir Force.  I talked to the two girls. They began to open up and talk about the hurt they felt and then forgave each other.  I told each one of them that one day they will marry. They needed to learn how to work through a situation in order to have a good relationship in that marriage.  Both girls looked at me in a shocked way.  After about 3 minutes one of the girls looked at me and said: “Pastor Randy I don’t want to marry her.”  Surprising I said, No, No, No that’s not what I meant.  The other girl relieved said, “I also thought you said that.”

Sometimes I will take a circuitous route when going to my mom’s house in order to see the river.

Word of the Day – Circuitous

  • Passion

I was asked last night what my greatest passion was.  The first thing that came to my mind was leading children spiritually.  I think a really close passion to that is reading and writing.  I can’t get enough of it.  I love transporting myself into the eyes of another person.  The book I’m reading right now is looking through the eyes of the Japanese before, during and after World War 2.

    What is your greatest passion?

I rarely have an extemporaneous lesson.

Word of the Day – Extemporaneous

  • Vacation

My favorite vacation was our trip to Niagara Falls.  It was awe inspiring to see the rushing water.  I could just stand for hours and watch it.  I took a picture that day and it now is on our wall as a reminder of the power of nature.

What is your favorite vacation memory?

    Jesus has charisma.

  • Kings & Queens

I think it would be cool if America had Kings and Queens.  It seems to work for England.

Would you like to see Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses in America?

    Psalms

I do not have a plethora of tasks to do today.

Word of the day – Plethora

  • Past Time

I enjoy reading authors tweets, facebook and blogs.  I read about their struggles when a manuscript gets sent to the editor, their excitement when the book first comes out in print.  It’s like being in the kitchen while a great chief cooks a meal.  I don’t read many books that I don’t contact the author via email.  I like hearing their thoughts and watching the process.  One of my favorite authors has a book coming out in May and I look for any update on the book.

What is one of your past times?

America is in a acerbic mood.

Word of the Day – Acerbic

  • Thankful

A hurricane of  craziness, irrational trash and lies are storming through this nation. There are many people that are buying into this destructive media hurricane.  There are leaders that are fueling this verbal storm.  The eye of this storm has an eternal calmness.  In the hurricane you will get hit by flying debris.  I choose to be thankful to my Lord my God who has total truth and I will rest in the eye of this hurricane.

  • Shooting in Arizona

Arizona Sheriff Dupnik told the news media Saturday that he blamed “the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business.”  The Sheriff is democrat and in an interview with Fox News stirred the political pot against what is assumed republicans and talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh.  After he defended his statement he said that when one party tries to block another party’s agenda, it is not good for America. He made this comment after he spoke briefly about health care.  When he was challenged about this by fox news he said that it was up to the listeners to decide.  So you decide:

Do you think Sheriff Dupnik should be able to use his office as a voice in using this tragedy as a way to get people upset in order to silence those that disagree with the democrat agenda?

    Or

Do you think Sheriff Dupnik is on to something and America’s freedom of speech needs to be looked at?  And when the government deems someone as inspiring hatred (even it’s oppositional to an issue) that person be prosecuted by law enforcement.
