Jim Carrey Who was he? What was his childhood like? He was a a rambunctious and fearlessly outspoken child with a wildly active imagination. The youngest of four siblings, Carrey was born and raised in Toronto.
But perhaps the most defining period of Carrey’s young life commenced shortly after his 14th birthday, when his father, an aspiring jazz saxophonist who had worked for years as an accountant to feed the family, lost his job.
Everyone in the family was forced to take a job, including Jim. This embittered Carrey, eventually dropped out of school. Carrey sought relief from his anger with comedy.
One of the insights into Jim’s personality is what he (Jim) said about Ron Howard, “He is a child. He just wants to play and take the world with him.”
Whenever I see Jim Carrey on a speaking show I see a little kid that’s screaming for something, and doesn’t know what it is. Most comedians mask the pain of lack of inner peace, with outward demonstration. What I’ve read about Carrey, I believe this to be true. Although the youngest in the family tends to be a naturally born clown; Carrey’s embittered teen years, I believed caused him to stall in those years. There are many ways to mask the hurt that’s inside you.
Do you mask inner pain? If you do what ways do you mask it?
