Easter & History
Robert Todd Lincoln A man who could of been President but didn’t want the office. He says, “It seems difficult for the average American to understand that it is possible for anyone not to desire the Presidency but I most certainly do not.”

Interesting Facts about Robert:
*Most historians suggest that Robert Lincoln was the most successful of all the presidential children.
*The only incident that Abraham Lincoln ever lashed out in anger at his son was when young Robert lost the inaugural address on a train ride to Washington.
*Robert attended Harvard.
*He enrolled in the Civil War.
*As it was winding down on on the morning of April 14, 1865, Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Washington with Robert in his entourage. The President and 1st lady invited Robert to join them for a performance at Ford’s Theater, but Robert declined the invitation. Abraham would be assassinated.
*Mary Lincoln was too bereaved to attend Abraham’s funeral and Robert performed this chore.
*For several weeks Robert had his mother followed by detective agents.
*Robert would have his mother (Mary) committed to an insane asylum.
*Mary complained that someone was following her. (This was used as evidence against her.)
*She won her release and fled to Europe, fearful that Robert would strike again.
*Abraham Lincoln had a dream a week before the assassination: He saw a coffin in the East room and when he asked he was told, “It’s the President.” The following day Abraham opened his bible and read the account of Jacob and his dream. Abraham spent the next few days going through the Bible looking for dreams.
*Upon reading the account of this dream Robert couldn’t shake his feeling of guilt, “If I had been at the theater, things would of been different.”
*In 1881, President Garfield had a troubling dream of his own death. He summoned Robert Lincoln because he knew the account of Abraham Lincoln and wanted some insight. They were to depart together on the presidential train. Robert arrived late at the station just as the assassination of President Garfield occurred.
*In 1901 President William McKinley began to experience troubling dreams. He sought out Robert. On September 6, 1901, Robert arrived just in time to see the president shaking hands with the crowd. As Robert drew near to the President, an assassin fired the fatal shot.
*Robert Lincoln died on July 25, 1926. Robert had previously chosen not to be buried with his family, but at Arlington National Cemetery.
How is the date for Easter picked?
History of the Easter Egg: 16th century German literature depicts the Easter Bunny as delivering eggs. (Eggs were symbols of resurrection & continuing life) Colored eggs were left only for the well-behaved good children.
For centuries, eggs were prohibited during lent, so at Easter eggs were a treat.
Easter new clothes: At one time in history, one set of clothes was worn throughout all lent, then discarded for a new outfit on Easter.

My mom wasn’t into the new clothes for Easter. Now more often then not I am coming to church directly from work and wearing scrubs. I bet that is what I end up doing again.
hahahaha…RYC: No way… it’s 10 degrees here… lol… but sunny… i love snow and sunshine
EASTER is the “principal” celebration of the Church. It is the oldest Christian observance, after Sunday, which came to be regarded as the “weekly” observance and celebration of the Resurrection. Although, in the Catholic religion, it is celebrated at every Mass, every hour of every day throughout the entire year.
Easter is the day which celebrates the “Christian Passover” (the time of redemption). The origins of the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ go back to the very “early” Church. We celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Moon) that occurs upon, or next, after the vernal equinox (March 21st). If the Paschal Moon, which is calculated from a system of golden numbers and epacts AND does not necessarily conincide with the astronomical full moon, occurs on a Sunday, Easter day is the Sunday after. Easter, therefore, can fall between March 22nd and April 25th. This rule was FIXED after much controversy and uncertainity, which lasted in various parts of the Church down to the 8th century.
This is accurately exact as to how Easter Sunday is picked out of each year.
Thanks for the info. Ang
i always used to love getting a new easter dress.
have a wonderful day !
Great info. Thanks for sharing.
why do i see a “trend” in easter and christmas? only well-behaved children get the eggs or presents from santa… hmm.
ryc: thanks for your comment!
RYC: They can be descented but they still have a lingering odor, and not a pleasant one, either. My son had a ferret that was demusked. That thing STILL smelled awful.
I don’t remember getting new clothes for Easter growing up. I always get new clothes for Christmas, my dad always tells us that we should look nice to celebrate God’s birthday. Easter egg hunt, I never heard about until I came to U.S. Easter in the Philippines is about sacrifices so there was a lot of re-inactment of what happened to Jesus and some people were actually nailed (literally). I thought it was crazy.
I love a new Easter Dress!!
the history of easter goes back much further than that.
norse pagans thought that the equinox, which happens to fall just around easter, was the time when the earth was open for fertility. they harvested mushrooms, shaped like eggs, and had fertility rites in celebration of life and appeasement of their gods.
Wow. I learned a lot today! Thanks for sharing, everyone. I wouldn’t mind wearing the same clothes all through lent as long as I got to pick them & daily undie changes were allowed, but then a tee shirt & jeans might not be the most appropriate attire for stuff like church & business meetings….
I thought you’d know, since you have the moon phase on your site. I never could figure it out.
hellooooo, mr bunny!
RYC: Easter is determined by the moon phase combined with the equinox or something.
Good history on Robert Todd Lincoln. I never knew much about him.
that is interesting…
The whole Lincoln family saga is a good example of rising above tragedy.
Vernal Equinox -> Full -> the next Sunday = Easter.
Hi~ you like history very much? Do u like Chinese history too, its amazing~
Hum… i will tell my mum about the new outfit for Easter tomorrow… and ask her to buy me new clothes for Easter lol.
Robert Todd Lincoln sounds like a very scary dude! His appearance at the side of “assinated” U.S. Presidents seemed to portend their respective deaths….like the prelude of the Grim Reaper!
Your little history lesson also (now) makes me aware that Mary Todd Lincoln was (very possibly) in suspect in her husband’s assination. That’s scary too. Or did I misconstrue the information? I did know, by way of personal history recorded about her, that Mary was a possessive and driven woman, who managed to convince Abraham Lincoln she was the woman for him. I’ve always questioned that because Mr. Lincoln was a man of extreme moral standard. History confirms that…..although Hilary Clinton and her cohorts made attempts to re-write the history about the first Republican President by slandering his name with salicious lies. Yikes!! What an incredibly evil person she is!!!
Very interesting. I love historical trivia, especially about Lincoln. Living in Illinois, I am surrounded by things about him. I have been to his gravesite in Springfield. Hope all is well with you. Take care & God bless!
okay thanx 4 all that.
don’t we need one another to battle before we see the King face-to-face? Absolutely!
Okay….I’d forgotten about Mary Lincoln and her “far out” ideas. Thanks for reminding me. I really don’t think Mary “ever” rode on all four wheels. Anything written about her seems to exhort her proclivity to being imbalanced. She was, however, jealous of Abraham’s true and lasting love, Ann. (I can’t recall her last name.) She died of Consumption before he went into politics. How can anyone be jealous of the dead??? But I guess, because Abraham was such a contemplative man, she just may have thought that in those moments of deep contemplation, he was thinking about the love of his life. Perhaps he was….who knows…but it is likely he was more involved in thoughts of how to end the Civil War. That would be more along the lines of his interest, at that time.
Yes! Mr. Lincoln was a Christian and certainly one could tell his devotion to God by way of his conversations, what he wrote and how he conducted his life. Perhaps Robert got his “faith” from his dad because Abraham Lincoln carried his worn Bible with him everywhere. I can only imagine Robert witnessing his father reading the Good Book. (What a beautiful concept.) I have several books on this great president and one of them is a reprint of some personal letters to family, friends and relatives. Each and every letter, beautifully and tenderly written, involved writing about God the Father, Jesus Christ and/or the Holy Ghost….what was pleasing to God and what to avoid. It was almost like A. Lincoln began the question, WWJD.
Thanks for such a quick response
Thank you for sharing that tidbit about Robert Lincoln. I never knew he even existed — I didn’t study history much…
got dizzy while reading the account, still dizzy. very troubling. such strange occurances. i truly feel bad for robert. he wanted nothing to do with presidancy and got his wish to the full.
Derek
Oh it’s quite alright.
I charged it. It’s alive now.
hello visiter
I don’t think I’ve been to the Robert Todd Monument in Springfield, but it’s been YEARS since I’ve gone. If it’s newer, for sure I haven’t seen it. Take care & God bless.
That must have been tough - having people die right before you show up!
hahaha, I was wondering the same question and someone told me, so I told you
We always got new clothes for Easter when we were growing up. Of course most of the time, when we were too young to have a say so, Mom would buy me and soonerrose the same dresses. Kinda sucked being a twin some times…LOL.
newsboys rock =)
whoa, why did Robert Lincoln have him mom commited to an insane asylum? famous people often tend to have the oddest skeletons in their closets….but I must say, I don’t have much respect for insane asylums judging on things I’ve heard….but I’ll admit that they’re probably necessary to a certain degree.

Best Wishes for a fabulous Weekend
Ronny
RYC: Yes, soonerrose and I are identical twins…
I think I would be a great president, especially if it was a dictatorship, lol. I could never raise all the money needed. I wouldn’t want to put my hand out like you have to do these days. I am inelligable anyway as I was born in Canada.
I believe you had the answer to your question about Easter ( Pâques in French from the latin Pascha ) .
I have been amazed by the story of Robert Lincoln and his mother . Is there a particular reason that makes you write about this at this moment ?
In friendship
Michel
Do I know you?
I don’t think I’d have asked him to come around if I ever had a bewildering dream… yeeash scary
