100921-M-6740B-516 One of the things I liked in the Navy is the humanitarian deeds we did.  We picked up refugees.  The children were so excited over getting balloons.  It looked like it was the first time they had ever seen the colorful round items.

  • Children are so precious all over the world.  I have found Tootsie Rolls and bubble gum are popular, too.

  • I remember my Navy days aboard the USS Nashville.    When the ballons came out, the wide eyed wonderment was fun to watch.   As a helium balloon would ascend into the heavens, we heard so much squealing and delight, even from those who’d seen this happen before.   The the toys would come out.  Hello Kitty seemed to be the most popular, followed by Strawberry Shortcake dolls.    Of course, Barbie wasn’t too popular, but Ken was a big hit.   I sometimes wonder what it would have been like to babysit children onboard instead of Marines.

  • yes, kids flock to service folks.

  • @Kowpatty - Yes, children are precious.
