  • Politics

I was talking to this guy this morning.  He told me that he hated all the bad stuff said about President Obama.  I agreed with him and said it wasn’t a good thing, after all he is our President.  I was curious as to how he felt about the republicans that get mud thrown at them.  He was all for that because they deserved it.  It was very obvious that democrats could do no wrong and republicans could do no right.  It caused me to wonder if that’s the way a lot of people think.

    So here’s my question:
Do you side on issues or do you side on the party you support?

I don’t see myself as guile, but I do know people that are very skillful in this area.

  • Issues, always issues. It’s the main reason I’m registered as an independent. It’s beyond me how anyone can sincerely say that they believe that “X” is right or wrong just because a political party says so. Apart from it obviously being a logical fallacy, it’s also basically a kind of ethical relativism, a concept that I reject completely and wholeheartedly.

  • I consider myself neutral. Or maybe just misinformed. It’s hard to pick sides when it’s obvious both sides need to cooperate and compromise. If we’re all picking sides, how can we ever be united?

  • I side, usually, on my party because that is where my beliefs lie. However, I do not condone the bashing that goes on. I didn’t like it done to my side and I won’t do it to the other side. But I admit to carping on the extreme of both sides. I’m Republican and if I had to say one side was wrong I too could go the mean route and say, “The democrats won’t stay out of my wallet and want to take my money.” I don’t see how that is any different than democrats screaming that republicans need to stay out of their bedroom… as an example. Both sides are going to feel they are correct. Some issues I think there is only one correct (murder is always wrong) while some issues I feel can have opposing sides that both have valid points (a woman’s right to her body vs. right of the unborn to live). People need to be more open-minded and kind is my usual retort.

  • I hate partisan politics. The issues are the most important thing. That’s why I consider myself a happy Independent.

  • @zionlover -  I agree with you, I think it is a very level headed way of thinking!

  • Compromise?? Some issues are not worth dividing over but others very much are for me. Constitutionally valid or not is far more important than party allegiance. Moral issues drive me to vote for an individual or not. To blindly follow a party or individual is what got Hitler elected by 90% of the vote in 1934. Obviously being united is not always wise and compromise often is foolish.

  • I guess the right question here is if people really vote. You can declare yourself an independant a democrat or a reuplican, but if you don’t vote, it makes no difference. We had a recall election here in Miami. Everybody was pretty upset with the way the Mayor was doing his job. So, we voted him out and fired the guy. When the re-election came around only 15% of  the people voted. Makes you wonder if with such a low turn out in any election, are the issues put into place really reflect the majority.

  • Ehh. :P I let other people deal with the issues; I consider myself independent, and I never vote, nor do I have any desire to.

  • @soullightsky – thanks for commenting. Is there a reason you don’t vote?

  • @The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter – I agree. Every American should vote. No vote is no voice

  • @Lucy_or_Ethel – good point about Hitler.

  • @TiredSoVeryTired – yes open minded and think through the issues

  • I am libertarian. Both parties are awful in almost every way.

  • @The_ATM – I don’t know anything about libatarians

  • The ideal would be to be objective and well balanced . But ….!

  • @fauquet - Objective – I so agree.  I also understand the -But…….

  • I am not getting into this discussion.  If I was a spice—the Bible says I need to be salt.  That is what I strive to be.  Sauce???  I eat Ken’s Honey Mustard Sauce on everything.

  • I used to side with the Republican party, but not any more. Now I side with the issues.

  • It’s all about the issues.  Being partisan shows weakness, IMO.  It shows you’re not willing to research the issues and develop your own opinion.  I used to side with the republicans on almost everything, but I find myself straying from that more and more.  No, I’m not siding with the democrats, either.  I’ve noticed I’ve been siding with the independents out there.  They don’t have party leaders to answer to.  They answer to their voters, which is what politicians should be doing, anyway.  We see the RNC and DNC threatening to cut off funding for politicians that break party lines.  Isn’t that a clue that partisanship is for the fools?

  • I side myself on issues, and with the position I take on them, it seems to side me with being Democrat. I do, however, disagree with some things Democrats do. I just tend to disagree with a lot of the things Republicans (usually conservatives) believe in, such as banning gay marriage, limiting the financial help from the Zadroga Bill to help first responders of Sept. 11 who suffer health problems, and so on.

Simply siding with a party just because isn’t the logical thing to do. It shouldn’t be about the label, but about where you stand on issues and solutions.

  • I’m a Libertarian/Objectivist, so I get pretty appalled by both sides, however, when I do end up on a side, it’s usually the Republicans. I also get disgusted with Democrats more easily. What I usually think is an obvious solution isn’t typically advocated by either side and would require a major overhaul of our current system.

  • Oh yeah, and if I were a spice, I’d be cinnamon, because it’s my husband’s favorite and it goes well with vanilla, my favorite scent, and chocolate, my favorite sweet. Barbecue sauce, spicy please.

  • I actually side based on issues… I don’t agree with everything the party says, I’m not extremist to any side. But, I certain say there should be respect to our very own president no matter what. He is trying and it’s not easy being a position of power. And mud/ dirt shouldn’t be thrown to people either Repub or Demos after all we are people and even though we don’t agree we would have courtesy enough to respect.

  • @pinktiger335 – yes. I agree. I get bothered when stuff is passed around about Obama that is not true. I feel the same way with Palin

  • @Veronica_Leigh - I think that’s a much better way to do it.

  • @laytexduckie - I agree with you.  It should be issues.

  • @WaitingToShrug - I don’t know much about the Libertarian/Objectivist party.

  • @WaitingToShrug - Spices – love it.

  • @pinktiger335 - Yes – I agree that the President deserves respect.  I didn’t vote for him but I won’t disrespect him.

  • @Randy7777 -  yea, they should stick to the truth. And also respect. But, people like playing dirty games. I wasn’t going to vote obama, I would have wanted Hilary but we all know what happened there. Oh well.
