Waving
We’ve lived in different parts of the USA. Washington State, California, Mississippi and South Carolina. It’s so interesting that when we’ve driven back and reentered Nebraska/South Dakota I see something that I didn’t see anywhere else. People waving to each other in vehicles. The Yankton Police are very good at waving to passing vehicles. People around here constantly wave while driving.
Do you wave at passing vehicles? Do people wave back?
Flood Update: I went to a Flood Informational Meeting. Many houses in Yankton are expected to flood. The Jim river is expected to back up and also Marnes Creek. We did get good news and the creek is not expected to flood. Hopefully that is right. We have a house right by Marnes Creek. Dakota Dunes, just about an hour from here is expected to flood completely. There is a lot of sandbagging going on.

I never see that… so no… I guess people in Ca are so caught on with their lives and always having somewhere to be that they don’t look but to the road ahead of them…
I don’t drive but when I was a teen I used to sit outside with my friends and waved at every car that went by lol. I’ve only ever lived in Pennsylvania after leaving Puerto Rico as a kid that is. I might move to England in the future if all goes well with my boyfriend. I don’t see myself living anywhere else in the USA though. I’ll be celebrating 23 years in Pennsylvania on the 4th of July.
We wave in vehicles to say thanks, for instance, if someone lets you out in front, etc. In just passing, it’s not uncommon for people to do the “head nod”.
I walk my sons dog every day and do wave at passing cars and trucks. Yes they do wave back!!!
My husband does, but I think it’s weird–except if they do something nice, like let me go in front of them or something.
I wave when I feel extra friendly and I usually get waves back.
My friend has a mini cooper and it’s like theres an underground mini network or something because they all do this weird head nod to each other when they pass. Its interesting. But no, I dont think we wave around here in Georgia…or maybe im just oblivious. southern charm isnt as applicable on the roadways.
I’m from Boston, all we do is quack at the Duck Tours…
I wave often at passing vehicles and people I drive pass on the side of the road. I’d say most the time they wave back. It is pretty normal to wave here.
I’m in SD, too, and people wave all the time. I think it’s pretty common in the midwest.
I’ve never seen that. If I did see that, I would assume they were trying to physically tell me something negative, not positive. Plus, I don’t more distractions.
That happens a lot around here. I get waved at occationally by people I don’t know but maybe they know me from work. I help a lot of people that I may not remember. I think it makes the world seem smaller and more friendly when it happens though.
Yes, I do that too.
Actually, here in my city we don’t wave to passing vehicles. We simply shoot them the bird!
@The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter - LOL – I think
@nattata - Thanks
@NightlyDreams - Yes it does.
@makesenseofmadness - Interesting – thanks
@rachelbachel32 - You’re right – it is common in the midwest.
@C_L_O_G - thanks
@Day923 - LOL – Duck Tours – I assume it’s the amphipian vehicles.
@youveleftmespeechless - weird head nod – interesting.
I’d never be able to put my hand down. Waving is something I think is more common in country living.
@shinoseishi - thanks - waving back at you -lol
@yourkbear - I’ve found people around here aren’t too bad of drivers. I see a lot of curtious drivers.
@boydcreek - That’s Cool
@bethro78 - head nod – interesting.
@xsimplepleasuresx - I believe that.
People in Texas are friendly, and we wave.
@NightCometh - I remember driving through northern Texas. I was so surprised when I saw people move to the side to allow you to pass. -so friendly of drivers.
Hope you are not affected by any flooding. No, ppl around here do not wave to each other.. The only exception: I do wave to my neighbors as I leave or enter my driveway.

waving at people will get me shot unless they moved out of the way for me(pun). Waving is usually out of thanks in LA or if you KNOW that person.
I wave sometimes, depends on the situation. Most of the time people wave back even if it’s only the tall man salute. This is Memphis so you never can tell what reaction you may get from a wave around here. It does keep life interesting though.
@BenelliMan – hat’s not goodt
@greatredwoman – we’re not personally affected. We know people that are
Do you want to get shot? I even avoid looking at people in the car next to me. Sad, isn’t it? I’m a friendly person originally from North Dakota. One ethnic group even fails to acknowledge you when you’ve allowed them to get in front of you … so now we don’t allow them to do it. Rude people!
