  • Job Less Rate

US Unemployment Rate Hits 9.2 Percent.  It was very disappointing news.  What did Obama say about it?  At the White House, Obama cited five “headwinds” that have slowed job growth:
    1. a string of natural disasters across the globe,
    2. higher gas prices, state
    3. local budget cuts,
    4. fiscal problems in Greece and the Euro zone,
    5. concern about whether the government will default over failure to raise the debt ceiling  (CBS - Bob Schieffer disagrees with the President on this issue)

    Then …. blame

I was interested in what President Hoover said during the Great Depression.  I was surprised to see that the same argument was waged then as it is today.  Here is a segment of Hoover’s Rugged Individual’s speech:  “To a large degree, we regimented our whole people temporally into a socialistic state. However justified in war time, if continued in peace-time it would destroy not only our American system but with it our progress and freedom as well.”

What would you like our President to say during these hard economic times?

  • Unfortunately, our unemployment is on the increase too.

  • What would I like him to say? The truth.

Unemployment is higher than the official numbers because the government stops counting those who remain unemployed longer than a year. My mom has been unemployed for about three years. I’ve been trying to get a business off the ground but otherwise I have remained unemployed for six years, staying at home to care for the kids. All of my siblings are unemployed too. It’s bad out there. I’m tired of the government trying to sugar coat it and making false promises.

  • That he is willing to resign to make things better.

  • I think unemployment is worse in some areas than others. I don’t know any unemployed people. One of my friends has only been back from Iraq for two weeks and got a job the first place he applied.
The president doesn’t control the job market and I don’t think it really matters what he says about it. He quoted the government figures. What else is he supposed to quote?

  • @C_L_O_G – I would like for him to take responsibility and quit blaming

  • @firetyger – agreed. Spin master Clinton said that the jobless rate will help Obama

  • But is all of it his fault? I don’t think so. I think the huge national debt is part of the problem, and that’s been around for way longer than Obama’s term. I’m not pointing fingers at either side, but I think if we’re going to say the President needs to take responsibility and not blame others, then all parties responsible in any way should do the same (that would include some of us on this side of it, too).

  • @prettynpink628 - No it’s not all his fault, but he is the Commander in Chief and he needs to assume responsibility.  I’ve adopted children out of neglect and abuse.  How would people percieve me as a parent if I continually say all their bad behavior was all the fault of the biological mother?

  • @Randy7777 - Ah, Ok. I see your point. I was thinking “fault” on a different scale than you, I guess. I was just trying to make the point that the “fault” is more widespread than just one person’s actions, or lack thereof, when it comes to allocating blame. I agree with you on the assuming responsibility bit though. I mean, it’s his problem now because of his position, even if he’s not the only one responsible.
