Swear
I was helping a lady get a couch. She was looking at and wondering how she was going to get it home. While she was looking at it she said, “God d….. it.” I looked at her and said, “If you don’t want it please at least don’t ask God to destroy it.” She got a chuckle out of it and put her hand to her mouth and said, “I’m sorry.” I then told her in a goofing around way that she’s fortunate that God doesn’t answer all her prayers.What do you think about swearing?

For me, profanity is kind of like a lot of other kinds of speech — it has its time and its place. I don’t generally swear at work, any more than I talk about religion or politics at work, but if you’re hanging out having drinks with a friend, it’s different. Or at least, it can be, depending on who the friend is.
It works the other way for me as well. If I’m watching an action film or something, I’m not going to be offended by hearing profanity, but in the workplace, I’m not going to want to hear it.
I swear all the time. Well, depending on the audience. I know to mind my p’s and q’s in front of the proper crowd. And actually, goddamnit is one of my favorite swears.
@TheSchizoidMan - Interesting – thanks.
When women start cursing like sailors, we know that civilization as we know it is gone.
Cussing itself doesn’t really bother me until the bring God into it. I like to make jokes kinda like what you did. I’m going to use that one now haha
I think we need more of it in our daily lives
Swearing ? Obviously these are words that humans have made up to insult others. One can look more or less educated if one uses them or not. But, bad words or swearing have no bearing with God. He is above all that. I really think God has a sense of humor and laughs at us humans. As he sees how we have complicated the laws we think are of God. When they are actually made by us to understand him better. I think humans can be compared to ants living in their own tiny universe oblivious of the bigger picture. Tell you what, if an ant swears, we would not understand what he was swearring at or could we care less.
I wish I can say that to the next person who swears.
I really do not think it is necessary.
@Grannys_Place - Agreed
@f5ye_angel5 - I just goof around with people that swear. I don’t think they realise what they are saying.
@The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter - I think you just insulted ants -lol
@LetterByLesson - LOL
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - You are so right. I can’t remember what President said it. He said what women allow so goes the nation. I think that is so true. Have a great day.
@your_paper_heart - ouch
I think that speech and vocabulary are fine without it and if people didn’t cuss so much we would be surprised at how rich our languages are.
I think people make way too big of a deal about swearing. I mean, yes, I do understand that “God damn it” is a pretty bad one; that might be the worst one, in my opinion, and I try not to say it. But most of the words people consider swear words, were man-made, and all in all, are just words. People have made them inappropriate. And as they ARE inappropriate in our public society a lot of the time, I can understand why people consider them “bad.” I just hate when people act like YHWH has some huge problem with us saying random, man-made words that our society says are “bad words.”
Now, I do NOT think YHWH wants us saying mean things to one another, including swear words. But that’s not necessarily about the words as much as it’s about how they are applied. If you’re going around swearing AT people, we have a problem. That’s rude, and not neighborly at all. I swear a lot, I admit. When I do it, though, it’s usually just to myself. I see a spider crawling on my wall, I drop a “F***!!!” because they scare me to death. lol.
I really do try to avoid “God damn it” though… because that really IS a curse — you’re telling the Almighty to damn something/someone; and while a lot of the specific swear words we use may not be of THAT great importance [in my opinion, anyway], cursing someome/wishing something bad upon someone, is a totally different story. That IS actually warned against in Scripture, and I do not believe YHWH wants us doing that at all.
So yeah. To me, it really depends on how the words are used, not what they are. Especially given that so many of them were made by man, not YHWH.
There’s an epidemic of swearing out there. I even hear little kids doing it.
some people have bad habits and I just wait for them to realize it themselves and hopefully with my silence they will realize that they need to change.
I don’t swear.
Thanks for the comment on my blog. I have enjoyed reading your blog, keep it up!
PS. I dont’ swear. Outloud at least. Sometimes I do in my head though, and I feel guilty for even that!
@OneMinuteWord - Thanks – I hear you on that.
@galadrielspitcher - Thanks
it’s funny that you mention swearing
I try not to swear, i substitute a swear word for
an amazing dish! like SUSHI!<3<3<3
Sometimes, it sounds really ugly..
to me, it makes a person ugly…??
@Babyboomerjill - So true. I usually goof around with someone that swears and they don’t get upset. We have a lot of people that don’t go to our church come to the church because of our free food giveaway and furniture giveaway. A lot of them swear.
@NightlyDreams - That’s the worse thing when kids swear.
@Randy7777 - you are welcome!
Really, it just isn’t polite to swear!
@soullightsky - I make light of it when someone swears around me. I goof around with them. I don’t get serious and they always take it good. What hurts me the most is when Jesus’s name is used wrong. I usually say something like, “Oh you talk to Him?” lol
@bmojsilo - I like good speech. My pet peeve is not only swearing but over used words.
I’ve always associated swearing with a lack of education. Educated people can come up w/a lot more clever ways to express them selves than w/vulgarities. As a Christian, I would rather hear a “F bomb” than the Lord’s name in vain. I think you handled the situation w/the woman well. Take care & God bless.
@curlyonegurl - I totally agree. Words are powerful and we should use them as such.
@Randy7777 - Oh dear… lol, I wasn’t trying to imply that you did! I’m sorry it sounded like that.
@Randy7777 - they -the ones who swear are like children and I try not to laugh because that would encourage them. As a retired nurse we had some doctors who liked to tell dirty jokes in the breakroom and we gals just left or didn’t laugh.
Swearing doesn’t bother me. Unless someone does it constantly, I suppose. I swear some, but definitely not as much as I used to.
@Babyboomerjill - Yes – At times I have someone say, “You may not want to hear this”. I always reply – Then don’t tell me. They try to tell me there joke and I stop them. I could care less if I offend someone about that.
@soullightsky - I didn’t take it that way at all.
@Karllynxxx - LOL
@Randy7777 - Well, you asked what we thought about it, so I gave my opinion. It was not supposed to be anything personal. I’m sorry…
@Randy7777 - When I said “I think people make way too big of a deal about it,” and talked about “god damnit,” I was talking about people in general. Why would I attack you? I think you’re nice.
@soullightsky – I never took it that way. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
@soullightsky – I never took anything personal. I invite straightforward comments
