Texting
I was grilling hamburgers in my back yard when I heard a large crash. I ran to the front of our house to see a bad car accident. I called 911 and went to the driver of the second vehicle. It was apparent that she had been texting and ran into the back of a van taxi. Her phone was in texting mode and in her lap. A nurse was on site and took over. She removed the girl from her car and had her sit across the street. The van taxi appeared to have little damage since the car was small and actually went under the van. (Oh by the way my hamburgers was well done but not burnt.) I personnally don’t want any more laws. I think we have way too many. I would like the insurance company to take up this issue. If you’re in an accident and texting is involved your insurance will go up.
Do you think there should be laws against driving and texting?

I say we legislate Christian morality and let the stupid get their just desserts.
Yes, there should be laws against texting and driving at the same time.
in california we do have such laws. i think a combination of stiff penalties attached to the laws and something with the insurance companies that might help. but the money should go to education and enforcement
distracted driving is distracted driving. one should be driving and not doing anything else. i have seen people eating using a plate and fork, applying makeup, reading a book, etc.
yes we may have way too many laws but this one maybe needed
I had a crash because of it that made me unable to walk for 6 months and ended up loosing everything I ever had, Hell yes it should be illegal. BAD illegal too. Like as bad or worse than DWI or DUI so that kids and everyone else will get the point. This is a HUGE problem that HAS to be stopped.
I understand the not wanting more laws, but possibly some of the ridiculous laws could be removed for more important ones.
Really! I feel for these people who have wrecks while “texting` but an Ounce of common sense at Any age should register somewhere in that brain that you don’t read a book, write in a journal, get in the back seat and just think the car knows what to do!
About the time someone i love gets killed by a fool texting, Drunk, someone talking on the phone, drops the phone and reaches down until they find it, kills someone i love, they would be better off with a law to protect them from me.
I’ve been hit twice because of these phones, the addiction is unbelievable. How did we ever make it from the house 5 minutes down the road to the store without a phone glued to our hand or stuck to our ear.
Nothing personal, I’m venting rightly so. Sometimes a minor accident being hit in the back at 30 miles an hour, nothing shows up or even hurts until months or longer down the road.Well, thats not even relevant.Once it’s done, guess who hurts, gets arthritis for the first time.. It’s so unnecessary!
For phones- there are so many devices available to talk handless —OH but most do not talk anymore- they must text. I enjoy technology but as with anything people have got to suffer consequences for very bad decisions. Its just as bad with drunks. Loose license every time and pay a fee- — until they kill somebody.
I’m done- this really hit a nerve on stupidity, lack of concern for others….common sense but the fact anyone even does it shows a lack of suffering consequences for bad decisions, and actions.
Oh well, my two cents worth and more. I think they are getting ready to change the law here concerning phones, I’ve not heard lately. Well- thought i was done… yep feel better too!
@PrisonerxOfxLove - Are you being serious?
@KnightInCROATIANarmor - Thanks
@buddy71 - Thanks
@a_thousandmiles - Thank you – This sounds like a very sensitive subject.
@Randy7777 - That’s a big negatory. To paraphrase General Patton: “It isn’t necessary that anyone know when I’m joking. It’s only necessary that I know when I’m joking.”
Unfortunately it seems that we need laws to protect us against our own bad behaviors. Some better training in the schools and families might be a better approach!
Yes, we do have too many laws. Unfortunately common sense is VERY rare, and people need the laws to tell them its common sense
I have a dear friend who now sits in a wheel chair, paralyzed from the waist down, damn near lost his life, all due to “distracted driving”. His life, my life, and those of his loved ones FOREVER changed simply to anothers’ lack of common sense.
A tough one, truly.
I think awareness and education are best. Use of common sense, and the available devices for hands free should be used.
Interesting facts :
So far this year in the U.S., there have been an estimated 812,517crashes involving drivers using cell phones and texting. That’s one every 24 seconds.
An estimated 24% of crashes, or more than 1.2 million crashes per year – can be attributed to cell phone use while driving.

Awful, just awful.
I’m not big on more laws either. That said, texting and driving should be illegal. I put it up there with drunk driving. I’m a good driver but I almost had a terrible accident because I was texting. I believe my son would have been killed, if not for the grace of God. So if I- an experienced and pretty careful driver- had a close call, how much more at risk is an inexperienced driver or person who doesn’t drive defensively? The insurance thing is a good idea to punish the texter. The problem is that an accident affects more than the driver at fault. I think we need to protect other innocent drivers.
Nope. I can text while driving and just not be an idiot about it. I’ve never come close to maybe causing an accident as a result of texting. There are plenty of other distractions people can find, and police drive with computers for Pete’s sake.
Oh, and then it just means people hold their phones in their laps rather than up by the steering wheel where they can see better.
If it should be, than everything should be: eating and driving, smoking & driving, switching cd’s, changing music on ipod, switching radio stations…..
We lose 3 points from our drivers licence (i think we have 12 in total on an open licence….P platers have 4 i think) and get fined a lot of money for texting and driving! It’s not safe at all.
@PrisonerxOfxLove - I like that – mystery. I’ll have to remember that quote.
@slmret - Agreed
@AradiaRose - I think some of the commercials on TV about texting and driving are very good.
@Pepin909 - Very good point. -thanks
@VampireOfSeduction - Great point. If a law against texting would be enacted then people would just text out of sight. I would probally say that was even more dangerous.
@amber_vp - Agreed
@isitreal_no - Can I ask what state has that law?
@Randy7777 - He used the word “acting” instead of my word “joking”. You can see George C. Scott say the line in the movie, “Patton.”
He said it at the outset of the Battle of Bulge as he set out to rescue the 101th Airborne Division at Bastogne.
