  • Government

One of the differences between Republicans and Democrats is the amount of involvement by the government.

Do you believe the government should be more involved or less involved in the affairs of this country?

  • I don’t think either option would make the government any better

  • less……much less

  • I’m not the first to say this, but I don’t think it is necessarily a question of the amount of government. Rather, it is a question of having government involved where it can be most effective. For example, I think government can be very effective in helping articulate large-scale objectives and values: reduce dependency on foreign oil, improve the quality of education, make affordable healthcare available to everyone, etc. But I think that more often than not, the private sector is more effective at determining how best to reach those objectives and achieve those values.

  • The US federal government should be limited by the Constitution as originally designed. The Progressives have made sure that the Constitution became a dirty dish rag, however.

That is double speak for one word:  tyranny.

  • @christao408 - I agree with the private sector being more effective.

  • I think it depends on the specific matter but in general, I think “the man” oversteps the boundaries a lot!

  • @PrisonerxOfxLove - Because, for example, deciding that a nationwide network of interstate highways would be a good goal is a tyranical act.

  • @christao408 - Government involvement in highways and petroleum has retarded technological advancement by keeping us dependent on the internal combustion engine.

Liberals want the government to severely limit pollution yet they are advocates for the most powerful force powering pollution:  big government.

  • @PrisonerxOfxLove - “The US federal government should be limited by the Constitution as originally designed.”

The founding fathers didn’t “design” our government. The Constitution, their legacy, established a framework for governance– for democratic legislation and enactment of laws. Government has only grown and contracted as we, the people, had influenced through our decisions at the voting booth.

Curtis, government isn’t “unconstitutional” just because your political preference had been outvoted at the polls.

  • @PrisonerxOfxLove - Not sure that your example meets the definition of “tyranny” and, further to your point, the Republicans are just as guilty as Democrats for the US government’s support of the automotive and petroleum industries.

  • @christao408 - Tyranny is a bi-partisan endeavor. It also includes the people who choose it for themselves at election time.
