Tough Talk?
I remember when I was in the Navy, we were asked to write a paper on President Reagan’s slogan, “Peace Through Strength”. Although I can’t remember what I wrote I liked the slogan from the beginning.
We’ll never forget the speech, “Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall.” President Bush also talked tough and called out those that were evil. President Obama has taken a different approach and has even apologised for America. He has what I call “soft talk”.Is tough talk or soft talk appropriate for this situation?

Obma is trying to take a different approach. he is trying not to be a bully as he had lived in other counties, and know what its like. Reagan was tough but his legacy went well. But for Bush he was tough, but messed up everything, by getting caught lying about WMD etc. That is why most people will not respect him now. Why wasn’t he even invited for the RNC!
I think it is a matter of trying to solve this problem by sort of mediation and not war. Unfortunately, I see, that Obama is inheriting Bush’s garbage, so to say.
@angys_coco - I agreed with your first paragraph but your second one was spineless. I’m so sick and tired of hearing blame. Obama needs to grow a spine and own up to his own responsiblities. I suspect he can’t because he has no success stories to run on so he runs on, “I didn’t do it”. We’ll see if America buys it.
One can only judge from the result. Looks like strong wins. As for the WMD, satellite images taken before Operation Desert Storm indicate truckloads of something going to Syria. Now Syria has suddenly produced WMD and are being warned by the USA not to use them on the protestors. So where did they come from? Sadam.
I also like this sentiment: Walk softly but carry a big stick.
@feedwaterclean - I totally agree with that. WMD were taken out of the Iraq and the US certainly couldn’t invade Syria also.
@TrainTrack - Yes
@feedwaterclean - but… saddam and assad would basically be enemies right? assad or syrian regime would more likely be iranian allies, and they are like sworn enemies to the likes of saudi and such.. i think saddam would be included in the enemy list from their perspective
as to your question, what do you mean by “this situation”?
Some people — and, in this case, governments — respond better to carrots, and others respond better to sticks. As to which is appropriate in this situation, I honestly don’t know.
Soft talk, aka, appeasement, actually incites enemies to violence. It took only 3 1/2 years for the world to go up in smoke by Obama’s soft talk. The rise of Islam will again plague the world for many years to come. Back in the day they road horses and carried scimitars.
Today and tomorrow the horse is a fuel laden jetliner or nuclear tipped rocket.
@maniacsicko - The unrest in the Middle East
@PrisonerxOfxLove - I agree
@Randy7777 - We were talking about postmodernism in your last post. For the postmodern, saying “peace through strength,” is like holding the Cross in front of a vampire.
Due to my age and my embarrassing lack of knowledge about previous presidents, their policies and their perspectives. However, I have heard before that it’s easier to be tough and then be “easy” than to be “easy” and then try to be tough. However, I also think America already has a tough approach to many countries, which can create conflict as well. I think instead of having an easygoing or difficult approach, we should just try to be more objective and face each situation the way we think it should be best handled–not merely take one approach to every situation.
Any moron can talk tough. The only effect that tough talk has is on the perception of the politician by his own constituents.
*Imagines Randy trying to play poker*
Randy: “You’re all weak. I’m going to win the game weaklings. Don’t you dare mess with me.”
Everyone else: “…”
Randy: “Do you hear how tough i sound? Well… i guess there’s no point in even continuing with the game now. The outcome is clear. I’ve acted so macho that I’m guaranteed to win. My hot air has given me the advantage.”
*I’m surprised that anyone actually thinks that this is the way the real world works.*
@makesenseofmadness - You’re right each situation is different
I don’t know which situation you’re referring too, but I think there is a time for both. Sometimes we need firm talk that shows our clear intent while other times we need diplomatic resolutions. I’m against having America play policeman for the world, so I don’t support the “go to war first and ask questions later” mentality that it seems we have had in the recent era. I think protecting American lives, standing by historical and trustworthy allies, and safeguarding national security are priorities, other than that, it seems that other countries should be accountable for their own national sovereignty.

I’m all about trying to use talks and such to get all parties on the same page. But sometimes you need to kick some ass in order to shut people up. I’m mostly waiting to see what comes next, I guess.
@adamgibi - Jesus Christ is the only True God and the Bible the only Word of God.
@maniacsicko - Though enemies, they are united in their hatred of “The Great Satan” and therefore are allied against us.
