  • Innocent

I’ve been thinking a lot about the events of this past week.  As Americans we have a system of innocent until proven guilty.  Yet America act as though they believe guilty until proven innocent.  After the jury brought back an innocent verdict on Casey I seen a lot of people picking up rocks. America declared her guilty in public opinion.  If the prosecution hadn’t tried to taint the jury pool in the beginning it’s very possible that this case wouldn’t of had nation wide attention. America wouldn’t have given it much attention.

Do you believe in innocent until proven guilty?

I was disappointed by the futilitarian response of Americans this past week.

  • Finish: If I was a soda pop I’d be __futilitarian. Why? It should be obvious.

  • It is hard to reverse our first opinions.  The news coverage of any event is never completely impartial.   Whatever is left out – even inadvertently becomes “evidence” of its own.  Juries and judges can make a mistake or even be swayed to rule overlooking some evidence.   Sadly, the media also knows that the reporting of an allegation can be construed as “proof.”   Yet they are quick to make much of the accusations of certain people….and discount those of others.

  • Of course I believe innocent until proven guilty, but, looking at the evidence / facts, I think she was proven guilty. I think partying while her child was dead / missing kind of proved her guilty all on its own. Maybe she didn’t kill her daughter, but she did a lot more than just lie to the police. If her daughter did drown in the pool, someone wasn’t watching her the way they should have been. If she was murdered, well, I’d had have to say it was her because no one whose innocent waits a month to report a child missing.

  • Absolutely. Presumption of innocence is a cornerstone of a free society. If it were “guilty until proven innocent”, it would be insanely easy for the government to establish a dictatorship.

  • I agree with yourkbear.

  • Yes, I definitely believe in innocent until proven guilty. Sometimes, it’s difficult to remember that trial by media isn’t the same as trial by jury, and we let our guts get in the way of hard evidence, but we must guard against this reaction if we don’t want to revert to a culture that’s okay with witch hunts.
@yourkbear - All of those things aren’t actually evidence. They’re indications of bad parenting, and cause for suspicion, but they aren’t proof of murder and shouldn’t be looked at as evidence.

  • @yourkbear - I have to tell you I work with single Mom’s.  The mother of the kids we adopted was exactly like Casey.  She wouldn’t have a problem of not knowing where her kids where for a long time.

  • @WaitingToShrug -  Wasn’t one of the charges (one that she found not guilty of) neglect? If that’s not neglect, please tell me what is.

  • @Randy7777 -  And that should have, at the very least, been reason to convict her of the neglect charge, but she was found not guilty on that one too. How?

  • @yourkbear - I thought that also but I looked into it and it was an aggraved child abuse charge.  They had to believe she physically hurt her daughter.  Not sure why they didn’t through a neglect charge on her.

  • @Randy7777 -  Ah. Well, they definitely should have charged her with neglect. Maybe it’s not too late for that.

  • @yourkbear - That I don’t know.  I’m just so surprised that a simple neglect charge was added.
